THE FETTER
In Anatolia, the fetter (bukağı) motif symbolizes family unity, the bond between couples, fertility, and lovers desire to unite. In Turkish engagement traditions, rings bound by a red ribbon are considered to be a form of sacred "bukağı", symbolizing continuity and eternity.
ANATOLIAN MOTIFS COLLECTION
This series celebrates the motifs found in Anatolia, especially those found in carpet and kilim designs. Not only are there many motifs, but each has many variations, and the collection is a result of a long process of research and selection to put together a series of pieces that embody the most iconic set of motifs.
Among the many many motifs are, for example, those related to birth and reproduction: the elibelinde (hands on hips), ram's horn, abundance, human, hair band, earrings, fetter, chest, love and unity, and star motifs. And the motifs symbolizing life: running water, burdock, finger and comb, amulet and evil eye, eye, cross, hook, serpent and dragon, scorpion, wolf's mouth and tree of life.
We take great joy in helping to prevent these significant motifs from being forgotten. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mine Erbek for her extensive research that resulted in the book Anatolian Motifs from Çatalhöyük to the Present – our most valuable reference.
