When the people of Athens had to choose which god their city would belong to, Poseidon and Athena offered gifts to win their favor. Poseidon struck the ground with his trident, and a spring of salty water burst forth — powerful, impressive, yet not very useful in daily life.

Athena’s offering was quieter but far more meaningful. She planted the first olive tree, a gift that promised food, oil, shade, and endurance. It symbolized peace, prosperity, and a life that could take root and grow. The people immediately understood its value and chose Athena.
From that moment on, the city took her name, and the olive tree became one of her most enduring symbols.
